The Volcano of Creativity

“Sometimes, the Pit Sends Something Back” ~ Alfred

Everyone I have met has given me a different definition of creativity and a different approach to be creative. When you look deep into the creative process of artists, you can find it scattered across the spectrum. There is Stephen King, who brings out his imagination in an organized and meticulous manner. Dan Harmon with his wild and eccentric way of creating stuff. So I think it’s okay to come up with my own version of creativity.

Do you know that feeling when you are finally able to remember the name of the song playing in your mind? That sums up my definition of creativity.

My creative process is simple. I love to imagine the mind as a volcano that is craving for something. To appease the volcano, constant sacrifices are needed. Books are my volcano’s favorite delicacy. I give it to it with a side of movies, series, and good old pop-culture. Sometimes, just sometimes the volcano sends something back. It would be so hot that I wouldn’t be able to keep it to myself. It would come out as stories, jokes, sketches, articles, and has the potential to take up bazillion other forms. Whatever form this “thing” takes up, it can kindle a spark in everyone who encounters it.

The volcano is not always satisfied with whatever we offer. In time, the volcano develops a taste; it won’t give anything back if the offerings are not up to its liking. The volcano is a strong believer in the barter system, give it what it likes, it will give us what we need.

Don’t expect the volcano to give the results soon after your offering. The volcano expects the person to spend a lot of time thinking. The thoughts are what fuels the volcano.

Creativity doesn’t come out of thin air. It is the result of thinking combined with some action. Now, for thinking we need something to think about; this is where books, movies, and other inspirations come in.

“Find your voice, shout it from the rooftops, and keep doing it until the people that are looking for you find you” ~ Dan Harmon

We are all artists, creators. It comes natural to us. We need to relax, think, and find and give what our volcano needs. Then one day, out of the blue it is gonna send something back; words fail to express the feeling.

Start Creating.

Thanks to Rahul Vinod for the awesome sketch!!
